When my husband and I planned our anniversary getaway, we imagined a relaxing trip filled with beautiful scenery, good food, and quality time together. There was just one little detail that made this anniversary different from all the others…
We were travelling with our 3-month-old baby.
I’ll admit it—I was nervous.
My mind was filled with “what ifs.” What if the baby cried the whole journey? What if she didn’t sleep? What if I forgot something important? What if she became unsettled in a new environment?
I almost talked myself out of going.
But looking back now, I’m so glad we did.
The trip wasn’t perfect, but it was beautiful. We made memories as a family, celebrated another year of marriage, and proved to ourselves that life doesn’t stop after having a baby—it simply changes.

If you’re thinking about travelling with your newborn, here are a few lessons I learned along the way.
1. Pack More Than You Think You’ll Need
One thing motherhood has taught me is that babies have the best timing.
They’ll need a diaper change just after you’ve packed everything away.
They’ll spit up on the only outfit you packed for them.
Or they’ll decide today is the day they suddenly need two extra blankets!
I packed extra nappies, wipes, clothes, bibs, muslin cloths, and formula (or breastfeeding essentials). At first, I thought I had packed too much.
By the end of the trip, I was thankful for every single item.
It’s always better to come home with unused baby supplies than to wish you’d packed them.
2. Don’t Forget the Essentials for Mom
As moms, we’re so busy packing for our babies that we often forget to pack for ourselves.
I made sure to pack comfortable clothes, toiletries, snacks, a water bottle, and a few things that helped me relax.
A happy mom makes the journey easier for everyone.
3. Work Around Your Baby’s Routine
Newborns thrive on familiar routines.
Whenever possible, we planned our travel around our baby’s feeding and sleeping times.
Did everything go exactly as planned?
Of course not!
But having a flexible routine made the journey much smoother.
4. Accept That There May Be Tears
Before becoming a mom, hearing a baby cry in public made me wonder why the parents couldn’t calm them down faster.
Now I know better.
Babies cry because that’s how they communicate.
During our trip, there were moments when our little one became fussy.
Instead of feeling embarrassed, I reminded myself that she wasn’t giving me a hard time—she was having a hard time.
That small change in perspective helped me stay calm.
5. Take Lots of Photos… But Be Present Too
I love capturing memories.
I wanted photos of our first family holiday, our anniversary celebration, and all those tiny moments I knew we’d treasure one day.
But I also reminded myself to put my phone down.
Some memories are best stored in your heart.
Watching my husband cuddle our baby while we admired the view is a moment no camera could fully capture.
6. Give Yourself Grace
Travelling with a newborn is different.
You won’t move as quickly.
You’ll make more stops.
Your plans may change.
Dinner reservations might become takeaway in the hotel room.
And that’s perfectly okay.
The goal isn’t to have a perfect holiday.
The goal is to enjoy your time together.
7. Don’t Compare Your Journey to Anyone Else’s
Every baby is different.
Some sleep through long journeys.
Others need frequent breaks.
Some love travelling.
Others take a little longer to adjust.
Do what works for your family.
Motherhood isn’t about following someone else’s rulebook—it’s about learning what your little one needs.
What Our Anniversary Trip Meant to Me
Looking back, I realise our anniversary wasn’t made special by the destination.
It was made special because it marked the beginning of a new chapter in our lives.
Seeing our tiny 3-month-old experience the world—even if he won’t remember it—filled my heart with so much gratitude.
That trip reminded me that becoming parents doesn’t mean we stop creating memories together.
It simply means our adventures have a new little passenger.
Yes, we packed more luggage than ever before.
Yes, we stopped more often than we planned.
Yes, we worried about every little thing.
But we laughed, celebrated, and made memories that we’ll cherish forever.
And if I could go back and give myself one piece of advice before that trip, it would be this:
Relax.
Your baby doesn’t need a perfect holiday.
He needs loving parents who are willing to make beautiful memories together.
Final Thoughts
If you’re thinking about taking your first trip with your newborn, don’t let fear stop you.
Plan, pack wisely, be flexible, and give yourself plenty of grace.
Things may not go exactly as planned, but that’s okay. Some of the most meaningful memories come from the unexpected moments.
One day, you’ll look back at those tiny baby socks in your suitcase, the sleepy cuddles, the frequent feeding stops, and the family photos—and you’ll realise it was all worth it.
So go ahead and take the trip.
Your little one may not remember it, but you certainly will.
